Visitors heading to Lake Padden Park this coming week will need to adjust their parking plans. The west parking lot at Lake Padden will be closed from Monday, September 28, through Friday, October 2, while city crews install roadway reflectors along the stretch between Wilkins Street and Samish Way.
Bellingham Parks and Recreation announced the closure Thursday, noting that the lot will reopen in sections as work progresses, starting from the Samish Way end. The trail system, courts, restrooms, and all other park amenities will remain open throughout the closure.
What the Work Involves
City crews will be installing roadway reflectors in the roadway between Wilkins Street and Samish Way, a stretch that borders the park's west side. Reflectors serve a safety function by improving nighttime visibility of lane markings and roadway edges, which is particularly valuable as fall brings longer periods of darkness and Bellingham's characteristic wet weather. The installation work requires access to the parking lot adjacent to that roadway, which is why the lot itself needs to be closed rather than just a lane of traffic.
The reopening plan is designed to minimize inconvenience. As crews complete sections of the reflector installation starting from Samish Way and working toward Wilkins Street, they will reopen corresponding sections of the parking lot. That means regular visitors may find partial access during the work week depending on what day they arrive and how quickly the project advances.
Getting to Lake Padden During the Closure
Lake Padden is one of Bellingham's most heavily used parks, drawing swimmers, runners, cyclists, dog walkers, picnickers, and paddle boarders throughout the year. The 1,000-acre park is anchored by a 150-acre lake and features a paved loop trail, a disc golf course, tennis and pickleball courts, and extensive natural areas.
During the west lot closure, visitors have a few options. Street parking along Samish Way and surrounding neighborhood streets provides an alternative, though availability can be limited during peak hours on warm fall days. The park's main entrance on Padden Parkway provides access from the east side of the park, and that area typically has additional parking capacity.
Runners and cyclists using the lake loop trail will not notice any disruption to the trail itself. The 2.6-mile paved loop remains fully accessible, as do the unpaved natural surface trails in the park's forested areas. The restroom facilities, which are a key amenity for longer visits, are also confirmed to remain open throughout the work period.
Planning Your Visit
The closure runs through the end of the regular work week, with the lot expected to be fully available again for the weekend of October 3 and 4. That timing is convenient, as weekends tend to bring the heaviest park use, particularly in September when weather in Bellingham often remains mild enough for outdoor recreation before the fall rains set in consistently.
