A Ferndale man is dead following a shooting in the early morning hours of Friday, May 8, and a suspect was taken into custody later that morning following a multi-agency response in the Sandy Point area. The Ferndale Police Department responded to the 2300 block of Ferndale Terrace just after 3:34 a.m. after receiving reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, the suspect had already fled the scene.
The victim was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have not released the victim's age or name pending family notification. The Ferndale Terrace area sits within Ferndale city limits, roughly east of Interstate 5 in a residential section of town.
At approximately 8:52 a.m., an individual matching the suspect's description was spotted on Sucia Drive in Sandy Point, a waterfront community along Drayton Harbor north of Ferndale. Deputies with the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office, along with officers from the Lummi Nation Police Department, Bellingham Police Department, Washington State Patrol, and U.S. Border Patrol responded to the area and took the suspect into custody without incident.
