The Bellingham Police Department issued a public alert Friday indicating that police activity at I-5 northbound at Sunset had prompted the closure of the Sunset bridge deck over I-5 in both directions. Northbound traffic was rerouted to exit at Iowa Street, while southbound drivers were directed to exit at Sunset. The closure created significant traffic backups on surrounding surface streets, and BPD asked the public to avoid the area entirely during the incident.
In an update posted at 3:00 p.m., BPD confirmed that I-5 and the Sunset Bridge deck had fully reopened. The department noted that the individual involved was receiving the assistance they needed. BPD expressed appreciation for the patience of drivers and thanked all agencies involved in the response. "There were many agencies who helped today and we are grateful for the assist," the department wrote.
The Sunset Drive bridge crosses over Interstate 5 in Bellingham's north end, connecting the Sunset neighborhood and surrounding residential areas to the freeway corridor.
