Historic Fairhaven Village is hosting its annual Dirty Dan Murder Mystery Weekend on April 25 and 26, 2026, with a fresh storyline written by Cryptid Escapes and clues hidden at more than 20 participating businesses throughout the neighborhood. This year's mystery is titled "The Phantom Peril of Professor Pristine," and participants will spend the weekend collecting clue cards, interacting with actor-suspects stationed throughout the village, and ultimately making their accusation to try to solve the case. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are priced at $30 for standard individual admission, $40 for VIP, and $20 for youth. Tickets are available through the Fairhaven Association website and at the event. The title sponsor for the 2026 event is Village Books and Paper Dreams, the beloved independent bookshop that has anchored Fairhaven Village for decades. Cryptid Escapes, the escape room company that wrote this year's story, brings a puzzle-design sensibility to the mystery that participants who've done escape rooms will likely appreciate.

Dirty Dan Harris is one of Bellingham's most colorful historical figures. A 19th-century frontiersman and one of the original European settlers of what would become Fairhaven, Harris was known for being consistently dishonest about his personal hygiene, a trait that earned him his nickname. He platted the town of Fairhaven in the 1880s during the speculative boom that preceded Washington statehood, and his saloon became a center of the rough-and-tumble social life of the era. His statue now stands near the village center, a genial local mascot lending his name to this theatrical weekend event.

The murder mystery format puts participants in the role of active investigators rather than passive audience members. Rather than watching a scripted performance, players purchase tickets that entitle them to a clue card booklet and map of the participating businesses. As they move through Fairhaven on foot, they collect stamped clue cards at each location and may encounter actor-suspects who offer hints, misdirection, or testimony depending on the encounter. At the end, players submit their accusation and find out if they solved the case. It is a self-guided, walkable adventure that keeps participants in the neighborhood for several hours.

Fairhaven Village is located in the southernmost section of Bellingham, centered on Harris Avenue near 11th Street. The neighborhood is walkable, dense with independent shops and restaurants, and one of the most architecturally distinctive areas of the city, with a number of late-19th and early-20th century buildings still in active use. Participants in the murder mystery weekend will move among locations including Village Books, the Colophon Cafe, Avenue Bread, Artwood Gallery, The Archer Ale House, Galloway's Cocktail Bar, and many others, all within easy walking distance of one another.

The event is organized by the Fairhaven Association, the business district's coordinating organization. Contact for questions is executive director Kimberly Anderson at the number listed on the event page. Parking is available in Fairhaven at the Village Green lot off Harris Avenue and along side streets. Given the foot traffic the event draws, arriving early or using Bellingham's bus service on the Harris Avenue corridor is recommended.
