The Wilkin Street entrance to Lake Padden Park in Bellingham will be temporarily closed for three days beginning June 29, 2026, as a paving contractor completes asphalt repair and replacement work at the park's northern access point. The closure is expected to last through July 1, with work depending on weather conditions.
Lake Padden Park is one of Bellingham's most-visited green spaces, anchored by a 150-acre lake in the city's Samish neighborhood. The park draws hikers, runners, mountain bikers, dog owners, and families year-round, with trails that circle the lake and connect to the broader Galbraith Mountain trail system to the north. During summer weekends, parking lots can fill early in the morning, making the specific entrance closure worth planning around for regular visitors.
According to Bellingham Parks and Recreation, the Wilkin Street entrance roadway and the gravel parking lot off Wilkin Street will both be off-limits during the construction window. Visitors should use the park's other access points, particularly the main parking areas off Samish Way, during those three days. The Samish Way lots provide access to the boat launch, the Golf Course, and the main trailhead areas on the south and west sides of the lake.
The good news for the many dog owners who rely on Lake Padden daily: the dog park will remain fully open throughout the project. The Golf Course, tennis courts, playground, restrooms, boat launch, and all pedestrian trail access will also continue to operate normally. Only the Wilkin Street vehicle entrance and its adjacent gravel lot are affected.
Asphalt repair projects at the park are part of ongoing maintenance under the City of Bellingham's parks capital program. In recent years, the city has also completed a major parking expansion on the Samish Way side of the park, adding a 184-stall paved lot in partnership with the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition to accommodate the growing number of visitors arriving to access both the lake loop and the Galbraith trail system.
The Wilkin Street side of the park connects to residential streets in the Samish neighborhood and is a common arrival point for walkers and cyclists who live nearby. The three-day closure is relatively brief, but given that it falls over a holiday-adjacent weekend leading into the July Fourth week, visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time to find parking along Samish Way.
