Downtown Bellingham is closing Commercial Street on Friday, June 19, for a free FIFA World Cup watch party that doubles as one of the biggest public events of the summer. The event, called Commercial Break and presented by The Den Bellingham and The Wild Buffalo, is part of Bellingham's designation as an official FIFA World Cup Fan Zone, one of a select number of U.S. cities chosen to host public celebrations tied to the global tournament. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the match kicks off at noon on a 16-foot LED screen.
Bellingham's fan zone status is a significant distinction for a city of its size. The designation brings official FIFA resources and recognition, and it has fueled a series of free outdoor watch parties this summer at venues around downtown. Friday's event is the largest yet, with Commercial Street itself closed to traffic to accommodate what organizers are billing as a street festival atmosphere.
The day carries added meaning given the Juneteenth holiday. Organizers have brought in a guest who ties the celebration together in a meaningful way: Temryss Lane, a former professional soccer player and enrolled member of the Lummi Nation, will be on hand to sign posters and take photos with fans. Lane is a Bellingham-area figure whose career in professional soccer and indigenous advocacy makes her a fitting presence at a community event falling on a day of cultural significance.
The event will include a beer garden, food trucks, giveaways, and a booth from Puget Sound Energy where attendees can learn about PSE Flex energy-saving programs and enter for a chance to win tickets to a Seattle Sounders match. A second watch party will run simultaneously at the Trackside Beer Garden hosted by Kulshan Brewing, which will feature on-site food, prize giveaways, and a family-friendly atmosphere.
Both locations are free to attend and open to all ages. The Commercial Break event on Commercial Street is presented in partnership with The Den Bellingham and The Wild Buffalo, two of the city's most established live music and sports viewing venues.
This is one of several watch parties Bellingham has hosted this summer as part of its fan zone programming. Earlier events drew significant crowds to downtown locations, and Friday's Juneteenth timing is expected to boost turnout further given that many county offices and some businesses will be closed for the holiday.
