The road to Artist Point at the end of Mount Baker Highway reopened for the season on Wednesday, June 10, several weeks earlier than last year. Washington State Department of Transportation crews finished clearing the final 2.7 miles of State Route 542 at 7 a.m., giving hikers, photographers, and sightseers access to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Pacific Northwest just in time for the weekend.
Artist Point sits at the terminus of SR 542, the Mount Baker Highway, at an elevation of roughly 5,140 feet. From the parking area, visitors are treated to 360-degree views of both Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan, two of the most photographed peaks in the Cascade Range. The location draws visitors from across the region and beyond each summer, and early openings like this one tend to create an immediate surge in traffic up the highway.
The early opening is the result of a relatively favorable snow year at that elevation. Since late May, WSDOT maintenance crews based out of the Glacier maintenance station have worked to remove as much as 20 feet of snow covering the highway and the Artist Point parking lot. That's a significant effort on a narrow mountain road, and crews typically work through multiple rounds of removal before the surface is safe for passenger vehicles.
Visitors heading up this weekend should be prepared for conditions that are still very much winter-like above the road itself. Most of the trails accessed from Artist Point remain under deep snow, including the Chain Lakes Loop and the routes toward Ptarmigan Ridge. Many of the directional signs and trail markers have not yet been uncovered from snowbanks. Hikers should have solid route-finding skills, appropriate footwear, and navigation tools before venturing off the parking area.
Basic amenities are in place. Vault toilets and garbage cans are available at Artist Point. The U.S. Forest Service's Heather Meadows Visitor Center was not yet open as of the reopening date, and its opening timeline had not been announced. Cell service is limited at Artist Point, so visitors should plan accordingly and let someone know their itinerary before heading up.
The timing of this weekend's opening coincides with the incoming heat advisory for Whatcom County, which is expected to push temperatures into the mid-80s in lower elevations through Monday. At Artist Point, temperatures will be significantly cooler, making it an appealing destination for those looking to escape the valley heat. However, with a heat advisory in effect elsewhere, the road is likely to be busy, and parking at Artist Point can fill quickly on sunny weekends.
