Pickleball players who regularly use the courts at Cornwall Memorial Park in Bellingham will need to find another spot through the weekend. Bellingham Parks and Recreation announced the courts at Cornwall are temporarily closed June 3 through June 6 for annual maintenance and repairs. Park Operations staff are on-site pressure washing the courts, conducting annual safety inspections, and completing any minor repairs identified during the process. The good news: Cordata Park's pickleball courts are open and available during this time.
Cornwall Memorial Park sits at the heart of Bellingham near the Sehome neighborhood, just south of downtown along Cornwall Avenue. The park is one of the more heavily used recreational green spaces in the city, offering walking paths, open lawn areas, a rose garden, tennis courts, and the dedicated pickleball courts that have become increasingly popular as the sport has grown locally and nationally over the past several years.
Pickleball has seen dramatic growth in Whatcom County, as it has everywhere. The sport's low barrier to entry, shorter court dimensions compared to tennis, and social format make it accessible to a wide range of players. Cornwall's courts attract a consistent daily crowd of regulars, from retirees who play morning games to younger players fitting in a match after work. The brief closure for annual maintenance is a routine part of keeping those courts in the condition that makes them safe and enjoyable to use.
Pressure washing removes the moss, algae, and debris that accumulate on outdoor sport court surfaces over the fall and winter months. Left unaddressed, that buildup creates slip hazards and accelerates surface deterioration. Annual inspections give Parks staff the opportunity to catch surface cracks, net post issues, line marking wear, and other maintenance needs before they become larger problems. The two-to-three day maintenance window is a relatively small price for year-round playability on well-maintained courts.
Parks staff noted that extra time has been reserved in the schedule to account for inclement weather or unforeseen complications. If rain delays the pressure washing or additional repair work is discovered during inspection, the closure could extend slightly beyond June 6. In the meantime, Cordata Park on the north side of Bellingham offers an alternative set of pickleball courts. Cordata Park is a newer facility with more open green space and ample parking, making it a reasonable substitute during the Cornwall closure. Players already familiar with Cordata's courts know it is a well-maintained facility in its own right.
