If you plan to visit Cornwall Memorial Park this week or next, plan around a parking disruption. Bellingham Parks and Recreation announced Sunday that a contractor will be performing asphalt repair and replacement in the park's parking lot off the Meridian Street entrance, with closures beginning as soon as Monday, June 2.
Cornwall Memorial Park is one of Bellingham's larger community parks, occupying a stretch of the Meridian corridor in the city's north end. The park is heavily used for sport courts, a popular disc golf course, and open green space. The parking lot off Meridian Street is the primary access point for most of those amenities, which makes the planned closure worth knowing about before you head out.
The work is scheduled in two phases. On June 2, a contractor will perform asphalt saw cutting in the parking lot and the section of park roadway off the Meridian Street entrance. That initial day of work sets up for the more significant phase: June 8 through 12, when full asphalt removal and replacement will take place. The city estimates approximately six working days for the full project, depending on weather.
During both phases, the parking lot and that section of roadway will be temporarily closed. However, Parks and Recreation confirmed that the Sport Courts, Disc Golf Course, all pedestrian access, and trails throughout the park will remain open throughout the construction period. Only vehicle access to that specific parking area is affected. Visitors are asked to use other available parking lots on the park's perimeter during construction.
Asphalt maintenance projects like this are a routine part of how the city manages its parks infrastructure. The Cornwall parking lot likely shows wear consistent with heavy seasonal use, and the timing of this project just before the peak summer months suggests the city is getting the work done before the lot sees its highest traffic. Resurfacing a parking lot mid-summer would be more disruptive and potentially more expensive due to contractor scheduling.
Cornwall Memorial Park is located along Meridian Street in north Bellingham, roughly between Eliza Avenue and Moore Street. Additional parking is available along side streets near the park. For the disc golf course in particular, players often arrive in groups, so carpooling to reduce the parking burden during the closure is a practical option.
If you have questions about the project scope or timeline, Bellingham Parks and Recreation manages park maintenance inquiries. The city has also been active this spring with several infrastructure improvement projects across the park system, a sign of deferred maintenance catching up after years of budget constraints. For those who use Cornwall regularly, this is a relatively short window of inconvenience for what should be a noticeably improved lot by mid-June.
