Cyclists of all ages and skill levels have a free workshop waiting for them Thursday at Bellingham's Central Library. Whatcom Smart Trips instructor Libby Chenault will lead a hands-on bike maintenance session in the library's SkillShare Space from 4:00 to 5:45 p.m. on April 23, covering the basic tasks that keep a bicycle rolling safely through spring and summer riding season.
The event is part of the library's ongoing SkillShare programming, which brings practical, community-oriented workshops into the branch and makes them accessible at no cost. Whatcom Smart Trips, the local program that promotes active transportation and sustainable commuting across Whatcom County, is partnering on the event and supplying a demonstration bicycle on-site. Note that participants will not be able to bring their own bikes into the library for the session.
The curriculum will cover the basics that every cyclist should know but that many people have never formally learned: how to lube a chain properly, how to pump a tire or fix a flat, which tools are worth having at home, and how to recognize when a problem is a DIY fix versus something that needs a professional repair shop. Those are exactly the skills that save a commute from becoming a walk home, or a recreational ride from ending in frustration on the side of a trail.
Bellingham is one of the more bike-friendly cities in Washington State, with an extensive network of trails, dedicated lanes, and relatively low-traffic neighborhoods that make cycling a practical option for many residents. The City of Bellingham's biking resources page includes maps of bike routes, information on the city's shared mobility options, and safety guidance for urban cycling. With the arrival of warmer weather, many residents are pulling bikes out of storage for the first time since fall, and a refresher on basic maintenance is well-timed.
Whatcom Smart Trips runs programs throughout the year to encourage residents to walk, bike, and take transit instead of driving alone. The organization offers free resources including personalized commute planning and occasional group rides. This library event is open to anyone and requires no pre-registration, though showing up a few minutes early is always a good idea for popular library programs.
The Bellingham Public Library's Central Branch is located at 210 Central Ave in downtown Bellingham. The SkillShare Space is a dedicated area of the library designed for hands-on programming and community learning events. Thursday's workshop is free, open to all ages, and no registration is required.
